Crocodile Dock Community VBS
‘Have you seen God lately?’ This question was posed to the 105 children who attended daily at CROCODILE DOCK Community Vacation Bible School at the Covenant Church. On June 1-5, kids “rocked the dock” as they were encouraged to watch for God in their daily lives.
The children studied five lessons throughout the week, including “Moses and the Burning Bush” and “Jesus Dies and Comes Back to Life.” Crew Guides ushered them from room-to-room each morning as they studied each lesson in a slightly different light in the various sessions –. Sing & Stomp Swamp, Spotlight Slideshow, Crawfish Crafts, Snack Shack, Gator Games, Bayou Drama, and Firefly Finale. By the end of the day, each child was familiar with not only the Bible story, but the rally cry, “Fear Not!” which they yelled out loudly when prompted with the Daily Bible Point.
The church was decorated in a bayou theme, complete with a ramshackle cabin, snakes, raccoons, frogs and the like. There was even a dock which jutted out into the pews. During the offering, the children would walk up this dock to lay down their non-perishable food gift, which was donated to the Knox County Food Pantry on Monday through Thursday, and then to Thabor Tots childcare on Friday.
Topping off the week was the Friday night ice-cream social at the Covenant church, where the parents and friends joined the mix. They were treated to several songs and watched all six Spotlight Slideshows, which were short videos starring the kids who attended throughout the week. Afterwards, ice cream was served outside, where children played, and friends chatted.
Janie Johnson was this year’s director and expressed appreciation for the ‘Group Publishing’ material that was used. “We’ve been using it for several years and are familiar with the format. The lessons are sound, and the kids really get into the contemporary songs.” She goes on to say, “This is a community effort. Kids and adults from all local denominations are present here.” The three town churches – Evangelical Covenant, Thabor Lutheran, and United Methodist churches take turns hosting and directing from year-to-year, and any child age four through 5th grade is welcome to attend.
Many thanks to Janie Johnson and committee, Joni Burns and Shelley Story for all their hard work to prepare and present this meaningful VBS program to the community. Thanks to all who helped in any way to make it a big success. The goal as always is to help the students see Jesus and come to know Him and experience His love for them in a real and personal way.
